6L45 6L50 6L80 6L90 Pump Line Up Tool
Great video, thanks for sharing Is there any kind of pump priming required after doing this kind of rebuild? I though you would have filled parts up with ATF during the build.
Not needed. If you feel the need by all means do it. If you fill the torque converter with fluid before installing it, it will drain into the pump.
You're awesome brother.. your videos help me out a lot when it comes to repairing transmissions.
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching.
Just disassembled a 6R80 from a 2017 half ton 4x4, 5.0L. Overdrive (4,5,6) is smoked to the point that there is no friction material on any of the clutch plates in 4,5,6. I know that there are issues with the drum. I have pressure tested with the drum on the table and through the forward clutch upside down, on the pump stator/4,5,6 input shaft (also through the stator/selective shim/bearings in place just as it would be in the case) and I can’t even get a small air bubble to show up. The piston moves nice and smooth. Can’t figure out why that clutch might have burned up. Any ideas?
Bushings are super critical in this unit. Especially the ones in the stator. But your problem is in the valve body and possibly the solenoids. I put these kits in when I do one. Don't forget you will need the separator plate as well. Usually destroy it when you take it apart. Number will be on the plate, match it up. Sonnax sells them. Also sells the solenoids. You will need the band number off the old ones. www.sonnax.com/parts/5233-zip-kit transgo.com/product-details/6r80-gen2-shift-kit/ transgo.com/product-details/zf6-kit-no-tools/
Great Video! Quick question, are there any valves in the pump? If so, which ones?
No valves. There is a drain back ball and spring.
To the Tech in this video: I am a “hands on learner” and crave lessons like this to teach me how to be better at working on cars. In the culture we currently live in, finding people like this to teach those who genuinely desire to learn is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I suppose this is one of the great benefits of technology and being able to post videos on the web such as this. I just wanted to thank you for your time and willingness to teach others who desire to learn, skills such as this, as I do not have anyone around me to teach me these things. I am aware of the truth that it has cost you many years of: labor, money, tools, education, and hard work to learn and share what you have in this video. I am grateful these types of opportunities exist, thank you again for sharing and I hope you realize how valuable you are!
Glad to help, thanks for watching.
My tacoma feels like brakes are stuck when i put it in drive, but rolls freely in reverse. Only does it when transmission warms up, what would cause that?
Sounds like 2 gears are applying at the same time. Probably valve body and/or solenoid problem.
Hi, do you know what the valve body separator plate code id is for your sequoia here? The 2wd? Also the casting #? I need to know so I can have the proper new valve body sent in for my sequoia.
8938 on the VB for both TV cable and solenoid style. C9 on the separator plate if you have a throttle cable, E17 if it has a solenoid.
Merci What is the disk for speed؟
Not understanding the question. Sorry.
My 2016 traverse with a V6 and I believe 6T75 transmission has the same issue. 2-3 flare that's worse with more gas. Only starts doing it once the fluid is up to Temp.
Probably worn dampers in the valve body.
Hi there. We have a jaguar xf with the 6hp-28 that keeps flaging up p2704 friction element e apply time and it then goes into limp mode. So far we have put new Clutches and bushings and accumulators new filter and oil. Any suggestions ? Thanks
Does it neutral out when it shifts or just throw that code?
@@CurmudgeonTransmission Hi thanks for the reply. Before we done the work it would neutral out like rev up and no power at all and a p0735 and the p2704 ,Then you had to pull to the side of the road and cycle the ignition. Now it just throws the code p2704 and goes in limp mode. Also quite a bit of flare between I think 3 and 4th gear. Many thanks for taking your time. Appreciated.
The planet will strip out the splines and give you a neutral condition when it shifts. There is also a tube in the back of the E drum that can give you that code. A worn bushing on the rear of the stator can give you a flare shift and that code also. Bushings are super critical in these units. Especially in the pump.
I have a Volvo with this gearbox, 1-5 gears work perfectly, when going into reverse you hear a very loud knock and a buzzing sound and the reverse is slow, I turn off the vehicle and turn it on again sometimes on the first try or with 3 At most attempts it works normally and the date on the board turns off. I think it is a valve, how can I identify the valve that is responsible for the reverse? I will appreciate any info
I believe you are going to find your problem is the instrument cluster. There is a module on the back that the transmission goes through. Volvo does not sell, nor will they help you with anything that is over 10 years old. We ended up having to find a used cluster. It's been a long time but as I recall there are a couple of different designs. So, make sure it matches exactly.
Recomiendas hacer esta reparación sin ser mecánico de profesión? Ya estoy cansado de que no me arreglen mi camioneta
If you are mechanically inclined it shouldn't be a problem.
I have a m112 716.677 that i need to swap to a 716.668(both nsg370 based) bellhousing to use it behind a inline Mercedes engine. Do you forsee any issues with that? Ive also been contemplating swapping the .668 bellhousing onto the jeep nsg370 to buuod a diesel Mercedes powered 4 wd. Are they similar enogh to pull that off?
I'm no expert on the NSG370. This is the first one I had come in and didn't even get to fix it. We also don't do swaps because there can be all kinds of problems you can run into that don't seem readily apparent. Only thing I can suggest is see if there is a forum where people are doing this. Wish I could have been more help. Thanks for watching.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission ok thanks. The way you handled it and the 2wd vs 4wd id on parts made it seem like you had been in there many times. When you mentioned the vintage 722.1 I figured you were a Mercedes guy too.
@@jasonbirch1182 I wouldn't call myself a Mercedes expert but I have built quite a few automatics and a handful of those were the early units. Hardly any standards.
Amazing Video .. Helped me a lot !!!
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching.
Just in case someone is searching for an alternative tool to install the lower case bushing I was able to use a camshaft bearing installation tool (universal kit)to drive the bushing most of the way down. The cam bearing tool was a little bit too long on the end so I took it out, put a regular bushing adapter in the bushing, then used the camshaft bearing driver on top of that to finish. Worked great. I think one could also use a long bolt though the bushing adapter, a bearing from a power steering pulley installation tool on top of the adapter, and a large thick washer on the rear of the case. Put a nut on the bolt (though the bearing/bushing adapter) and pull the bushing in with the nut. I believe that would work as well.
I agree, it should work. Thanks for watching.
seems your running out of transmissions to post videos on...hopefully you can make some money off all the great videos you have shared with us........ you deserve to be paid well for your talent and effort.. thank you for everything you have done.. you are a good man..
Was getting sparse there for a while. Got some new ones coming up though. Did this one because I have been asked, especially on this particular unit how I get them off. The stator ones are particularly difficult. Don't make much and subscriber count has severely dropped off. Figured it up a while back. Making about a nickle an hour for what I put into this. No matter how much the subscriber count goes up and the watch time, the pay does not seem to go up. It's like working for a dealership that won't let you flag your own hours. Maybe some day it will be worth the effort. Thanks for watching them.
Hi great informative video. I need to clean the solenoids on my U660F. I’ve seen people use and recommend mass air flow sensor cleaner. Have you ever heard of this? Thanks for your time.
Thanks. You can use that or mineral spirits.
My Drive and Revere are like Neutral.. what the problem with that? It's a 4t65e-hd
Needs to be checked out and make sure it is not something like a broken axle. But it sounds like it is time for a rebuild. Never know what you will find until you get in there.
@CurmudgeonTransmission I'm going to get around to checking it out. Could be broke axle
hi good day i have a terrano 1998 automatic was drive good then its not sellecting any forward gear only reverse what can be causing this please need some help thanks
Time for a rebuild. Minimum sounds like a bad sprag and/or forward clutches.
Thank you for your information. Always keeps them alive
Thanks for watching.
Im thinking about rebuilding my ranger tranny myself im mechanicaly inclined but nervous about transmission so ill study these vids and others wish me luck . Is there a rebuild manual by chance?
ATSG and ATRA both have one. Links are in the description. Then go to the bookstore tab. Wishing you success!
I found this video very helpful but I have made a mistake somewhere. I have a bind in D position that will not let the vehicle move. on jack stands it works fine except i have no overdrive. I did have pump whine but it is gone now. I know the trans has to come back out but where to look. Thank you
I would look at the shift solenoids. Either a bad/restricted 2-3 shift solenoid. Orthe wrong solenoid in that location. Or the reverse clutch clearance is too tight. The pump whine could be from misalignment. What did you use to line up your pump?
@@CurmudgeonTransmission hello sir I used the torque converter and the Transgo alignment tool. I will look at the solenoids before I pull the whole transmission. Thank you so much. I did pinch a wire while tightening the small valve body in the front that controls the overdrive. Could that be why the overdrive doesn’t work? Thank you again.
I would use the tool before the T/C, it does not work very well. Possible.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission thank you for your suggestions. I put new shift solenoids in and now it will not shift out of first unless the winter button is pressed.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission I left the speed sensor unplugged. Dumb dumb moment. Thank you again
Do you have a link for the rebuild kit?
It came from Fatsco. Link is in the description.
Great Video. Concise and informative, just the way I like it. Would you be able to post a rebuild video? Would like to see you rebuild.
Thanks. This is the same, just different torque capacity. ua-cam.com/video/5bGjVqHYI-Y/v-deo.html
Hey Tom! Thanks so much for the video, I've learned so much from it! Quick question for you, around 18:03, you show us the disassembly of the regular and balance piston. Do you need to compress the small piston to get the second snap ring out....or better yet, if a first-timer like myself used my spring press to compress the piston down to get the snap ring off...and perhaps it made a popping noise...do you think I killed both pistons? (nothing appears cracked, but there are 6 little "feet" on the underside of the piston that may now be damaged?) or does it have just a little movement and was just stuck? Cause I totally couldn't get the snap ring off from around the shaft, but inside those fingers without releasing a micro amount of pressure on it...totally didn't think I was cranking down that hard!!!! FYI, I had already removed the bellvelle plate and first snap ring... Thanks, and I'm bracing for the worst!
It must have been stuck because you usually can push it down by hand. If you want to take some pictures and send them to me on my Instagram I will take a look at them. It won't let you do it here.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission Thanks! Will do!
Your in a much more relaxed mood in this one…..LOL! Great job too this is one of your better videos. I am sure I haven’t rebuilt near as many of these as you have but I have done quite a few. This one (4R75W just like the one you’re working on) had that flat steel anti-clunk strap. It appears that the one I am rebuilding was very recently rebuilt and the anti-clunk strap popped out and caused all sorts of drivability issues. Flaring then slamming violently into 2nd or 3rd, ground a bunch of fine metal debris that scratched the steel’s and bushings bad enough they need to be replaced. Anyway the center support is beat up but the lugs in the case are 2 or 3 times as beat up!! Never seen that before. Take care and thanks for sharing your experience. I learned a few things on this one for sure!!
Thanks. I've never seen one come all the way out, bet it did do some damage. The flat one is suppossed to be the upgrade. They both suck. You might try using the Teckpak Fitzall one since the case is so worn. 76813.
Yeah the gal at the trans parts house sold me the Fitzal spring. I got a new center support and I’m changing the case too. I just feel like it had too much wear on the case lugs when it was built last and thats the reason it spit the “spring” out in the first place. I had to order a snap ring for the forward and one for the direct drum. Even with the Borg Warner frictions the clutch pack clearance is too much, makes me nervous. The last builder just put an extra steel in the direct clutch but that makes it pretty tight, like 0.015/0.018. Don’t really like that either.
I’m considering the J-mod on this one too. It’s a young driver n he’s got it all jacked up (2 wheel drive wanna be 4wd) with big wheels and crap. I think it will be a good one for it.
Did you happen to change and get the drum from WIT?I have been getting alot from there that have that problem. They are coming with thinner steels. Have a hell of a time getting the clearance right with them.
So I didn’t change the drum. I have seen them strip out, know they can be an issue, but I looked at this one closely and didn’t see any problems. I suspect it was replaced during the last rebuild. I managed to finally get the bushing changed out (almost gave up and replaced it during that ordeal) and reused it. The steel’s were the same thickness as the replacements.
What sensor is that white electrical connector near the neutral safety switch?
It is for all the solenoids inside the transmission.
Здравствуйте, подскажите уплотнитель номера деталей OD Drive. Under Drive. Reverse. И более все остальные детали А8LR1. GENESiS G80. Пожалуйста?
Sorry, I don't know the numbers.
I'm in South Africa and I'm repairing a 2001 Xj Cherokee AW4 transmission that got butchered by a couple of boneheads last week . I need the pump bushing on the converter side some O rings and the input shaft seal . I can't get the spares , I keep getting other boneheads on the phone who are singularly disinterested but helpfully suggest that they just happen to have a complete unit in stock and it's more than the entire vehicle is worth. Please advise where I can get a parts list with the part numbers and maybe a site where I can order the parts online. I'm a retired mechanic helping out an old lady pensioner who really can't afford to have it done by the dealership.

What year did this come out of? I have a 2016 cx9 that has aluminum shavings in the pan and hard down shift from 4 to 3. I am wondering if i would run into the same issue in trying to rebuild mine. Thanks, great work and information!
Thanks. 2014. Very Possible.
Liked the video, thanks for sharing. I have a couple general questions: When replacing the frictions, do you also burnish the steels or leave them be? Do you flush the transmission cooler or replace?
Leave them be. Not a fan of sanding them. If it comes to that point I would replace them with new ones. We have a flusher that heats up to operating temperature with transmission fluid in it. Works very well. If you don't have that. It would be a judgement call on the damage. Very hard to get it clean just using that can flush or mineral spirits and air. If it was real bad, replace it.

Great video a lot of help one question, I had to replace the range fork the first one broke the new one lasted 4 days and wore down even with the new pieces. I don't know why it's wearing out so fast. Fluid was good and everything seemed normal any ideas?
Have not had that problem. Maybe a clearance problem or something is keeping pressure on the linkage. Forcing it into the fork. I will run it by some guys I know and see if they have ever had that problem.
A paint pen would help to know when you have tightened them if you mark them after torquing them as a security measure also it helps with outside of case to make sure nobody else has messed with it for warranty work
Thanks for the tip. Thanks for watching.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission cheap insurance and saves time rechecking all the bolts. I like aclube or tsi for outside case and just a cheap paint marker for internal checks when I use to do them. It saves you money if someone tampering inside or messing with work no reason they should cracked open and gives reasonable doubt if all are cracked to void any warranties you may provide. Also lawsuits if they take it to another shop then say you did the work. Had this happen when a person was saying a transmission I did went bad but didn't he took it out put it in another truck then put a different one in that truck and brought it back with his receipt on his truck like 1k miles later to a different shop but didn't have the anti tamper markers saved me in court other shop said I didn't rebuild the transmission or install it correctly but they missed the marks and my stamp I put in the case on the inside near the pan mounting flange. Had another independent shop look over it and I was safe due to these markers missing and pictures of before and after I took of every job.
Im having problems with My 2002 s10 has a p0756 code when i start driving it feels like it's in second gear it shifts up fine but when i come to a stop an start again it feels like it's in second what can it be thanks

@@CurmudgeonTransmission I follow you from the country of Libya in North Africa. I would like you to be able to send me a video link to build a Tundra gear, body model 57 and engine 47. I think it is a 2007/2008 model. I have a gear that was dismantled and assembling it again has become somewhat difficult and I am afraid that I will make mistakes.
One more thing I wanted to ask. My Transtec gasket kit came with some nice gaskets for the tins where the factory normally uses RTV (came with a tube of RTV too). Have you ever used them? I’m going to try to, hopefully I won’t regret doing so!
If you get everything nice and clean and flat, you can use the gaskets. I use the RTV.
Finding this video is a downer. How do I just know the shop I paid to "rebuild" my powerglide didn't pay anywhere as much attention as this gentleman? Wish could have had him do it!
Thanks for watching.
Hey there... Was this a bad or diesel engine? Would they be the same rebuild? Have a 94 460 dually that needs rebuilt. Wondering if it would work?
It is the same rebuild.
I have 2013 ford transit connect, it drives fine and low and second I’ve lost overdrive and reverse and when you get up to route 35 to 4000 RPMs in drive it tries to slip any ideas I have changed the two shifts solenoids put in new fluid in it and also put a new filter. Still not working. Any suggestions
The end cover and/or the reverse and high drum are worn out.
Thanks again for taking the time!!! Hadn’t worked on one of these yes and didn’t have much knowledge about how they were put together and any known problems. This was very helpful in making sure I picked up everything I needed. What a fascinating little unit!! I thought the GM 6T70 was a marvel but this dude is a step above!!
Thanks for watching. Yeah, there is a lot packed in there.
Good stuff thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
The most common cause of this problem is a worn out inner surface of the Input clutch piston. Appreciate it, my 4T65E slips at take until the pump over comes, after that it runs shift fine until come to stop if i take off slow will sometimes shift without slipping. HOW CAN I REPAIR THIS
Going to need a rebuild. More than likely the forward band is breaking. Very common.
Do you have a reputable source which sale decent quality kits.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission once I've got it out will you have access for the replacement parts for purchasing.
@@SONSTHREESIXTY We don't sell parts. We buy most stuff from WIT or Transtar. Links are in the description.
Thank you! When you say "press down" before you torqued it, did you simply tighten the bolts, then loosen them once it was pressed down?
I use a bushing driver to get it down all the way before applying the preload to the shaft. You can also use an arbor press or just a regular press.
